Twenty questions on a gap: the prompt and all the games
A companion appendix to the article on guessing the gap.
Here is everything the players got in this game, and all 28 games question by question. The word to guess was mezera, the Czech word for a gap, the game was played in Czech and each model has one counted game here. For two of them, their original version is also at the end of the appendix. In sixteen games the answerer had a fixed table; fifteen of them were played on September 25, 2026, and Claude Sonnet 5.5's game on September 28, 2026, the day it was released. Twelve games were played on September 24, 2026, without the table. Each game says which.
The whole game ran in Czech, so the prompts, questions and answers on this page are translations; the Czech originals are on the Czech version of this page.
The prompt
A single first message, there was no system prompt. The same for all models:
Let's play a game. I'm thinking of one Czech word (a noun). You ask me questions that can be answered yes or no, and I will answer you honestly. When a question doesn't fully apply, I'll answer "mostly yes" or "mostly no". You can guess at any time, a guess counts as a question. You have 20 questions. Always ask just one question per message and write only that question (or guess), without comments or summaries. Begin.
After each question came an answer with the number of questions left, for example:
No. (19 questions left.)
After the twentieth question, instead of the count, came this:
No. That was the last question. What word was I thinking of?
The model answered this last question with a final guess. When the word mezera was in it, the game counted as guessed only in the final guess.
Rules for answering
The answers came from Claude Sonnet 5, which also played as one of the players. It knew the word and saw the player only through its questions.
Sixteen games with the table
Each game was run by an answerer that knew nothing about the other games. The prompt in full, minus the technical instructions on how to operate the script:
You are the answerer in a word-guessing game. You are thinking of the word **mezera**. The player is another language
model you talk to through a script. You only answer. You are playing **a single game**.
## About the word
Mezera is:
- an empty space between things (between teeth, boards, in a fence, between cars), **this is the predominant meaning**,
- a space in text (the character between words, made with the space bar),
- a pause or silence between sounds, notes, in speech,
- free time between events (a gap in a schedule),
- a missing piece (a gap in education, in knowledge, in the law, in the market).
## How to answer (in this order)
1. **Find the table row** the question falls under and answer **exactly by it**. Don't put your
own judgment above the table, not even when a different answer seems better to you in that game.
2. **Negation in the question** ("Isn't it…?", "Isn't it related to…?", "Is it inanimate?"): take the answer
from the table for the positive form and flip it (yes ↔ no, mostly yes ↔ mostly no). Add `!` to the row.
"Inanimate", "immaterial" and the like have their own row in the table, don't flip those.
3. **Several categories in one question:** "A or B" = the strongest of the answers (yes > mostly yes >
mostly no > no); "both A and B", "A and at the same time B" = the weakest. Write both in the row, e.g. `S1+S2`.
4. **Examples in parentheses or after "e.g."** only illustrate, the main category decides. When the word
mezera itself stands among the examples, answer **as if it weren't there**.
5. A question outside the table: decide by the predominant meaning (an empty space between things),
row `X`, and in the reason write how you reasoned. Don't invent new rows.
## Table
### Guess (the player names a specific word)
| row | when | answer |
|---|---|---|
| T1 | the guess is the word mezera in any form ("Is it mezera?", "Guess: mezera", "mezery") | `guessed` |
| T2 | "Is it X?", "Is it the word X?", "Guess: X", "X?", the declarative "It is X." and **X is a single noun that is not mezera** and is not in the list of general categories below. Close words belong here too: void (prázdno), emptiness (prázdnota), hole (díra), pause (pauza), silence (ticho), space (prostor), interval (interval), space bar (mezerník), absence (nepřítomnost, absence), distance (odstup), spacing (rozestup), distance (vzdálenost), crack (škvíra), slit (štěrbina), seam (spára), caesura (cézura), time (čas), rhythm (rytmus) | `no` |
When the player names several words as a guess in one message ("infinity, emptiness, or dimension"),
**only the first** of them counts. An adjective or adverb ("It is physical.", "It is live.")
is not a guess, answer by the table.
General categories (with "Is it X?" they are not taken as a guess, answer by the table): thing,
object, concept, abstraction, abstract, place, phenomenon, sign, symbol, mark, state, property, activity, happening,
event, process, animal, plant, person, human, feeling, emotion, food, tool, material,
substance, unit, word, noun. A multi-word description ("Is it an empty space?",
"Is it an empty space between things?") is not a guess, answer by the table (P2).
### Fixed facts

| F12 | people made it, it is a human creation | `mostly no` |
| F13 | positive or negative meaning, good or bad | `mostly no` |
### Disputed categories (the predominant meaning rule)
| row | category | answer | reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| S1 | time, stretch of time, period, duration, the passing of time, planning, schedule, calendar, "happens in time", "has to do with time" | `mostly no` | the time meaning (a gap in a schedule) is secondary, space predominates |
| S1j | specific unit of time, moment, date, appointment, deadline, past or future, season of the year | `no` | not even the time meaning is that |
| P1 | space, place (not geographic, see F7), distance, spacing, position of things relative to each other, "it is between something" | `mostly yes` | the predominant meaning is an empty space between things |
| P2 | empty place, empty space (multi-word description) | `yes` | exactly the predominant meaning |
| J1 | language, communication, speaking, speech, grammar, literature | `mostly no` | a gap in speech is a secondary meaning |
| J2 | written text, script, writing (on a keyboard too), typography, graphic or written character, character in a text, can be written with one character | `mostly yes` | a space in text is a common meaning |
| J3 | letter, digit, mathematical symbol, emoji | `no` | mezera is none of these |
| J4 | punctuation, punctuation mark | `mostly no` | a space counts as punctuation only marginally |
| J5 | symbol, sign, mark, something that stands for a meaning | `no` | mezera stands for nothing |
| H1 | music, sound, tone, rhythm, can be heard, has a sound, hearing, has to do with sound | `mostly no` | silence between notes is a secondary meaning |
| H2 | only "it is a sound / tone", "it has a sound frequency" | `no` | mezera itself makes no sound |
| V1 | can be seen, is visible | `mostly yes` | a gap between things and a space in text can be seen |
| V2 | can be perceived by the senses (in general) | `mostly yes` | mainly by sight |
| V3 | can be felt, tasted, smelled, touched | `no` | |
| L1 | light, color, darkness, shadow | `no` | no meaning of mezera has to do with light |
| R1 | relationship between things or people, interpersonal relationship | `mostly no` | mezera is a place, not a relationship |
| R2 | border, interface, edge | `mostly no` | mezera is between, but it is not a border |
| N1 | absence of something, missing part, "something is missing", emptiness, void (as a category, not a guess) | `yes` | common to all meanings |
| N2 | interruption, discontinuity, hole in something continuous (as a category, not a guess) | `mostly yes` | mezera interrupts a row, a text, a sound |
| M1 | mathematics, geometry, science, physics, numbers | `mostly no` | it can be measured, but it is not a mathematical concept |
| K1 | technology, computers, electronics, internet | `mostly no` | the space bar is secondary |
| K2 | art, culture, film, visual art | `no` | |
| K3 | law, statute, economics, market, education, knowledge, society, politics | `mostly no` | a gap in the law or in education is secondary |
| K4 | thinking, cognition, mind, imagination, fiction | `no` | |
| K5 | nature, landscape, outdoors | `mostly no` | there are gaps outdoors too, but they are not natural |
### Clarifications after the consistency check (September 25, 2026, apply to the corrective replay)
These are not new answers, only the classification of cases that answerer instances classified differently.
The wording follows the majority of the answers already given in the run.
- "physical quantity", "measurable (physical) property", "one-dimensional quantity" → M1 `mostly no`
(it can be measured, F8, but it is neither a quantity nor a property).
- "Is it X or Y?", where X and Y are single nouns from guesses (distance, length…) → a guess,
the first word counts → T2 `no`.
- "place or location", "place or space" (without geography, structures, nature) → P1 `mostly yes`.
- "can it be heard", "is it perceived by hearing" → H1 `mostly no` (H2 only "it is a sound / tone").
- a "state" that something is in (a room, a space, a person) → F4 `no`.
### Messages that are not a question
| row | when | answer |
|---|---|---|
| Z1 | a message with no question and no guess (a comment, a summary, an empty one) | `no` |
| Z2 | the declarative sentence "It is X." | take it as a question, row by content |
## Reason
With each answer, send the **table row** and one short sentence why. The player will see neither
the row nor the reason, it is only for checking. Don't give the player any hints.
The answerer had the five clarifications below the table in only eight games: in GPT-6 Luna's and Claude Sonnet 5.5's from the start, in GLM 5.3's from question 3, in GPT-6 Sol's from question 7, in Qwen 3.8 Max 0902's from question 10, in Gemini 3.8 Flash's from question 13, in Kimi K3's from question 17 and in Hunyuan 4's (Tencent Hunyuan 4 Preview at its maker, tencent/hy4-preview on OpenRouter) from question 18. In the other eight games with the table, no answer goes against them.
In six of them (GLM 5.3, GPT-6 Sol, Qwen 3.8 Max 0902, Gemini 3.8 Flash, Kimi K3 and Hunyuan 4), the game was replayed from the given question with a fresh answerer. Before that, an answer there had gone against the table or differed from the other games. The replayed version is the one that counts, and it is printed below. The original versions of the GPT-6 Sol and Qwen 3.8 Max 0902 games, which the article refers to, are at the end of the appendix. The other games were not replayed.
Twelve games without the table
The answerer did not have the answer table and ran several games in a row. Answers that should have come out the other way according to the table above are marked in the games. The rules in full, minus the technical instructions:
## About the word (as the author of the game means it)
Mezera is:
- an empty space between things (between teeth, boards, in a fence, between cars),
- a space in text (the character between words, made with the space bar),
- a pause or silence between sounds, notes, in speech,
- free time between events (a gap in a schedule),
- a missing piece (a gap in education, in knowledge, in the law, in the market).
Principles: it is not material (it is the absence of something), it is not alive, it cannot be picked
up, it can be measured, it can be seen (in text, between things), but not always (silence). It is not a feeling
or a property of a person, it is not a geographic place. When a question applies only to some of the meanings,
decide by the predominant one and answer "mostly yes" or "mostly no".
## Answering rules
- Allowed answers: `yes` / `mostly yes` / `mostly no` / `no` / `guessed`. Honestly and
consistently with earlier answers in the same game.
- Watch out for negation in the question: "Is it inanimate?" has the answer `yes`. Answer the question as it is asked.
- Questions about the language are legitimate: mezera is feminine, 3 syllables, 6 letters, starts with M.
- `guessed` only when the player says the word mezera as a guess (in any form). Close words
(void (prázdno), emptiness (prázdnota), hole (díra), pause (pauza), silence (ticho), space (prostor), interval (interval), space bar (mezerník)) are `no`.
- When the player's message contains neither a question nor a guess, answer `no`.
- Don't give the player any hints. The reason is only for the author to check, the player won't see it.
- Each game is separate. What the player said in another game plays no role.
Overview
For the games of September 25 and 28, I turned reasoning off, and where a model refused, it ran at the lowest setting. For the games of September 24, reasoning was turned off, and where a model refused, a budget of 1,024 tokens per question was requested. Which of the two applied to which model was not recorded. Not every provider kept to it. MiniMax M3 reasoned for up to 3,997 tokens on a single question, LFM 2.5 2.6B for up to 3,893 tokens on a single question. The column shows how many reasoning tokens the model actually used over the whole game.

The games
The questions and final guesses are translated as the model wrote them, with typos, quotation marks and formatting carried over as far as English allows. Under each question is the answer it got. Square brackets hold my notes, not the model's text. After a guess of a specific word they give the Czech original, because the answer table and the letter counts go by the Czech word; in the three games where the model guessed by letters, the Czech word stays in the text and the brackets give its meaning.

It understood the game: whenever it answered, it was always a single question with no commentary. But it spent the whole game going through household items and never guessed once. Its reasoning cannot be turned off, and in seven turns out of twenty it did not finish it even with a cap of 16,000 output tokens, so it returned an empty message. By the table, the answerer counted that as a message with no question (row Z1, answer no), so of its twenty questions the model asked thirteen.

Added later: Kimi K3.1 Pro
Kimi K3.1 Pro from Moonshot, the successor to Kimi K3, played on October 24, 2026, the day after it appeared on OpenRouter, with the same prompt and the same answer table as the Claude Sonnet 5.5 game. It is not added to the 28 games above, to the overview or to the groups from the article.
It did not guess the word. It understood the game: every message was a single question with no commentary, and no turn came back empty. It got "mostly yes" for an abstract thing and for sensory perception, and in the tenth question for a place or a space as well. Then it tried to find out what kind of place: on Earth, in outer space, in the mind, in the human body, on the internet. In the last three questions it guessed "emptiness" [prázdnota], "distance" [dálka] and "infinity" [nekonečno], and to the final question it answered "void" [prázdno], with the caveat that it was not sure. Its reasoning could be turned off, and it was off.
